Normally, bobbleheads don’t look a lot like their subjects. But they got Gene Honda‘s right.
“I think the likeness is pretty spot on,” said Phil Sklar, co-founder and CEO of the National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum. “I remember Gene saying something to the effect, ‘It looks great, except it looks too much like me.’ ”
Honda is the PA announcer for Illinois football, the White Sox and Blackhawks.
Honda is donating his proceeds from the bobblehead to Illini Media for the important role it played in his career.
The Honda bobblehead has the usual shaking top. But it also talks, saying, “Hello, I’m Gene Honda,” and “Thank you for supporting Illini Media.”
Sklar always thought Honda would be a good subject for a bobblehead.
“Getting to know him better during this project has been fun, and he’s a great guy,” Sklar said.
TODAY
Colorado vs. Washington, 8 p.m., Fox
The Buffs and the Huskies play for the Pac-12 title at Levi’s Stadium. If Colorado wins, it sets up a nicer bowl trip. If Washington wins, it will be hoping it did enough to impress the College Football Playoff committee. The resurgence at Colorado is one of the best stories in years. Amazing, given how far the program had dropped. T.O.T.M. hopes Colorado mascot Ralphie the Buffalo is at the game.
SATURDAY
“Saturday Night Live,” 10:30 p.m., NBC
Thanks to the presidential race, the show is now must-see TV. Or at the least, must-record TV. Emma Stone hosts with Shawn Mendes as musical guest. The president-elect doesn’t like it, but Alec Baldwin is perfect as Donald Trump. If he wants, Baldwin has a four-year gig. Hard to imagine anyone doing a better job.
SUNDAY
“Elf,” 5 p.m. Freeform
T.O.T.M. loves Christmas movies, especially when man-child Will Ferrell is one of the stars. Many great lines that I find myself using in day-to-day life: “Santa! I know him!” and “You smell like beef and cheese.” I won’t spoil any of the rest. I have seen this film, which should have won the Academy Award for best picture, about 50 times.
