With six graded stakes with $3.4 million as its centerpiece, the inaugural launch of TVG Super Saturday on September 27 at Belmont Park will feature an array of family-friendly activities, a food truck festival and a tribute to the now-retired legendary race caller Tom Durkin, for 24 years the voice of the New York Racing Association.
Part of Saturday’s stellar race card will be broadcast on the NBC Sports Network starting at 5:30 p.m., and will feature the 95th running of the Grade 1, $1 million Jockey Club Gold Cup, expected to attract the top three finishers from the Grade 1 Travers, V. E. Day, Wicked Strong, and Belmont Stakes winner Tonalist, along with Grade 1 Whitney winner Moreno and a number of other graded stakes stars.
“Over the course of the past year, the New York Racing Association has revamped its racing schedule with a specific focus on generating ‘must see’ events that horseplayers, racing fans and the entire family can enjoy, and TVG Super Saturday at Belmont continues this fresh approach,” stated Christopher K. Kay, New York Racing Association Chief Executive Officer and President. “Not only will the day feature increased purses, larger cards and a higher level of racing competition, but will also include a food truck festival with a distinct New York flair, as well as family-friendly activities and a tribute to legendary race caller Tom Durkin. There will be something for everyone, and we look forward to welcoming horseplayers, racing fans and families from across the region to Belmont Park this Saturday.”
The Jockey Club Gold Cup, at 1 ¼ miles, will serve as a Breeders’ Cup Challenge “Win and You’re In” event for the Breeders’ Cup at Santa Anita Park on October 31 and November 1. The Grade 1, $400,000 Vosburgh for sprinters, the Grade 1, $600,000 Flower Bowl for turf fillies and mares and the Grade 1, $600,000 Joe Hirsch Turf Classic are also “Win and You’re In” races, with the victors earning all-fees-paid berths to their corresponding races at Santa Anita.
Rounding out the star-studded stakes offerings on the 11-race card are the Grade 1, $400,000 Beldame for fillies and mares, headed by multiple Grade 1 winner Stopchargingmaria, and the Grade 2, $400,000 Kelso at a mile, featuring Grade 1 Woodward winner Itsmyluckyday.
The New York Racing Association is offering a $500,000 Guaranteed All Stakes Pick 4 on Saturday on races 7-10, culminating in the Jockey Club Gold Cup, with an approximate post time of 5:50 p.m.
In addition to the Food Truck Festival, featuring some of the finest mobile cuisine in New York, the Belmont Park backyard will be the site for numerous family-friendly activities for guests of all ages.
TVG Super Saturday also will celebrate the legendary career of recently retired race caller Tom Durkin. In recognition of his extensive contributions to thoroughbred racing, a limited number of commemorative Tom Durkin bobble heads will be given away to guests when the gates open, while supplies last.
Durkin will also be available for autographs and picture taking, starting at 1 pm. This free session will be limited to the first 200 guests securing autograph vouchers, which will be distributed by New York Racing Association officials at noon.
Guests seeking to participate in this free opportunity can pick up their autograph vouchers in the Grandstand’s main concourse, located on the first floor across from the Customer Service booth. One voucher will be distributed per guest.
