This morning, to celebrate the upcoming start of the college football season, the National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum unveiled an officially licensed Minnesota Golden Gophers Goldy Gopher Push-Up Counter Bobblehead. The unique bobblehead lets Minnesota fans count along with the number of push-ups Goldy Gopher does each game and is part of a series featuring over a dozen college mascots that do push-ups when their team scores. The officially licensed bobbleheads are being produced by the National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum, an official licensee of the University of Minnesota.
- Released in conjunction with the start of the 2024 college football season, the bobbleheads are now available in the National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum’s Online Store at this link.
- The bobbleheads, which are expected to ship in December, are $40 each plus a flat-rate shipping charge of $8 per order.
- Each bobblehead is individually numbered to 2,024.
- A four-time winner in the Universal Cheerleaders Association Mascot National Championships (2011, 2013, 2017, and 2018), Goldy Gopher is one of the most recognizable and beloved figures in the state of Minnesota, which became known as the “Gopher State” in 1857. Minnesota’s athletic teams started being referred to as the Gophers in the 1920s, but it wasn’t until 1934 when Minnesota broadcaster/sportswriter Halsey Hall dubbed coach Bernie Bierman’s all-gold uniformed team “The Golden Gophers.” Goldy Gopher the mascot began making appearances at games in 1952. A signature move of Goldy’s is head spinning, usually brought on by crowd chants of “Spin your head!” The tradition started at hockey games in the early-1990s. Another popular ritual was established 30 years ago: During football games at Huntington Bank Stadium (formerly TCF Bank Stadium), Goldy does a push-up on a board held up by cheerleaders for every point after the Gophers score a touchdown. During the tryout process, students interested in becoming Goldy are tested in their push-up prowess.
- Minnesota kicks off the 2024 football season when they host North Carolina on Thursday night at 7pm.
