This morning, the National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum unveiled a limited-edition Houston Cougars vs. Rice Owls Rivalry Bobblehead ahead of Saturday’s game between the two rivals in Houston. The bobblehead features Houston’s mascot Shasta and Rice’s mascot Sammy the Owl with a replica of the Bayou Bucket Trophy. The bobblehead commemorates the rivalry also known as the Bayou Bucket Classic.

The special edition bobblehead, which is being released in conjunction with the 46th meeting between the Cougars and Owls on Saturday, September 14th at TDECU Stadium in Houston, Texas, is available exclusively from the National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum, an official licensee of the University of Houston and Rice University.

  • The bobbleheads are now available in the National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum’s Online Store at this link.
  • The bobbleheads, which are expected to ship in January, are $50 each plus a flat-rate shipping charge of $8 per order.
  • Each bobblehead will be individually numbered to 2,024.
  • The bobblehead is being released in conjunction with the 46th meeting between the teams on Saturday, September 14th at TDECU Stadium in Houston, Texas.
  • Standing side-by-side on a football field base that reads “COUGARS” in one end zone and “OWLS” in the other end zone, Houston mascot Shasta and Rice mascot Sammy the Owl are wearing their respective uniforms and holding a football adorned with their school logo. Positioned in between Shasta and Sammy is a replica of the Bayou Bucket Trophy. The front of the base features the logos for each team.
  • The Bayou Bucket Classic was first played in 1971 when Houston joined the now-defunct Southwest Conference. Prior to that matchup, the teams previously met in a 1946 scrimmage in Houston’s inaugural season. The football rivalry is the longest running competition between the two schools. While the Southwest Conference no longer exists, the teams still play as non-conference foes. The Cougars lead the all-time series, 33-12, but Rice snapped a seven-game losing streak with a thrilling 43-41 victory in double overtime in last year’s matchup.
  • The winner of the Houston-Rice game receives the Bayou Bucket, which is a full-sized trophy with a golden bucket on top.
  • “We’re excited to unveil this limited-edition Houston vs. Rice Rivalry Bobblehead ahead of tomorrow’s game in Houston,” National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum co-founder and CEO Phil Sklar said. “This bobblehead will be the perfect way for Houston and Rice fans, alumni, students, faculty, and staff to show off their school pride!”
  • The National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum, which is located at 170 S. 1st. St. in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, opened to the public on February 1st, 2019. The HOF and Museum also produces high quality, customized bobbleheads for retail sale as well as organizations, individuals, and teams across the country.
