This morning, to celebrate the start of the 2024-25 school year, the National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum unveiled the first Richmond Spiders Bobblehead featuring Richmondโs mascot WebstUR who is one of the most unique mascots in all of sports. Over the next two weeks, we are unveiling our back-to-school bobblehead collection, and weโre excited to have Richmond included. The officially licensed bobbleheads are being produced by the National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum, an official licensee of the University of Richmond.
- The bobbleheads are now available in the National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museumโs Online Store at this link.
- The bobbleheads, which are expected to ship in December, are $35 each plus a flat-rate shipping charge of $8 per order.
- Each bobblehead is individually numbered to 2,024.
- Standing on a base that reads โSpidersโ across the front with a backing featuring the Richmond logo, the WebstUR bobblehead has him pointing forward while wearing a No. 1 Richmond jersey.
- The University of Richmond is the only school in the country which sports the nickname Spiders. Richmond was initially known as the Colts until 1894 when a new nickname was born. A baseball team comprised of University of Richmond athletes and city residents had a lanky pitcher named Puss Ellyson, who confused batters with a long kick in his delivery. Richmond Times-Dispatch writer Ragland Chesterman described Ellyson as โtaking to the field โฆ as a spider in a web.โ The current mascot was introduced during reunion week in 2011. Over the years, the mascot was referred to as โSpidey.โ A new name was necessary because โSpideyโ is a trademark used by Marvel Entertainment, LLC. โWebstURโ received the most votes in a naming contest.
- “Weโre excited to unveil the first Richmond Spiders Bobblehead featuring WebstUR in conjunction with the start of the new school year,โ National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum co-founder and CEO Phil Sklar said. โThis bobblehead will be the perfect way for Richmond fans, alumni, students, faculty, and staff to show off their school pride!โ
- The National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum, which is located at 170 S. 1st. St. in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, opened to the public on February 1st, 2019. The HOF and Museum also produces high quality, customized bobbleheads for retail sale as well as organizations, individuals, and teams across the country.
