  • The first costumed mascot named Buster Bronco appeared in 1974. The idea to have a Bronco as the school’s mascot originated during the first year of classes in 1932 when the school was known as Boise Junior College. Students picked the mascot because it represented the wild horses that roamed the Owyhee Mountains. In 1935 and 1936, the student body constructed paper and wooden broncos, nicknamed Elmer. The mascot was paraded downtown and set on fire before each Homecoming game. Throughout the 1960s, various live horses represented the Broncos. In the 1970s, Boise State president John Barnes recommended the Associated Student Body president and College Union Director encourage the students to create a costumed mascot like the Idaho State Bengal.
  • During football games on the one-of-a-kind blue turf field at Albertsons Stadium, Buster Bronco has been known to perform push-ups on a raised platform for each point on the scoreboard for Boise State when the Broncos score a touchdown or convert a field goal.
  • “We’re excited to unveil this unique Boise State Broncos Bobblehead Collection in conjunction with the Mountain West Conference Championship Game tonight with an opportunity for Boise State to make the College Football Playoff,” National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum co-founder and CEO Phil Sklar said. “These bobbleheads will be the perfect way for Boise State fans, alumni, students, faculty, and staff to show off their school pride!”
