Hornets announce ‘Classic Night’ games to celebrate 30th anniversary By CLTure News
The Charlotte Hornets announced earlier this month they’ll be utilizing a throwback look at Spectrum Center with a court paying homage to the 1995-97 Hornets on Classic Nights. Today the team announced the schedule for the eight retro games for the 2018-19 season celebrating the 30th Anniversary of the inaugural 1988-89 Hornets season. The team will be honoring former Hornets greats Muggsy Bogues on Friday, December 14 against the New York Knicks, Glenn Rice on Saturday, January 19 against the Phoenix Suns, and Larry Johnson on March 8 against the Washington Wizards.
The Classic Night schedule will kick off Opening Night (Oct. 17) against the Milwaukee Bucks with the second game on November 17 against the Philadelphia 76ers when the franchise recognizes the 10 players selected for the 30th Anniversary Team. All fans in attendance will receive a t-shirt on opening night, while the first 7,500 fans on November 17 (Philadelphia 76ers) will receive a t-shirt commemorating the members of the 30th Anniversary Team.
The Hornets will also salute legendary broadcaster Steve Martin on Friday, December 28 against the Brooklyn Nets. The first 10,000 will receive a talking Steve Martin bobblehead that features Martin’s call of Alonzo Mourning’s buzzer-beater in Game 4 of the first round of the 1993 NBA Playoffs against the Boston Celtics.
The team will wear the new white Classic Edition uniforms for Classic Nights, a style worn by the team from its inception in 1988 through 1997 addition to playing on the classic hardwood court. The games will include appearances by former greats and include retro experiences to take fans back to the Charlotte Coliseum of the late 1980s and 1990s.
