Michigan basketball bobblehead earns place in Hall of Fame By Andrew Kahn

The 1989 Michigan men’s basketball team earned a trophy, a banner that hangs at Crisler Center and the distinction of being the program’s only national champion.
Now, it has its own bobblehead in the National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum.
The physical hall and museum, which is still under construction in Milwaukee, will be home to the Michigan basketball bobblehead commemorating the 1988-89 team.
The bobblehead, unveiled Wednesday online, is the 28^th in a series honoring schools that have won a men’s basketball NCAA Tournament title. Most feature a school’s mascot; since Michigan does not have one, a “vintage” player in a Michigan jersey was used.
Manufactured by FOCO, the sturdy figurine and stand depicts a cartoonish player, wearing a maize headband, standing on a basketball court, holding a basketball in one hand and a championship trophy in the other. Behind him, a vertical plaque reads, “NCAA Men’s Basketball Champions 1989,” though the plaque is mostly obstructed by the bobblehead itself.
Michigan has reached the national championship seven times in school history, including four times since its lone victory. The Wolverines made the title game just last season, losing to Villanova.
In 1989, Michigan stormed through the NCAA Tournament as a No. 3 seed, beating Xavier, South Alabama, North Carolina, and Virginia to reach the Final Four. The Wolverines defeated Big Ten foe Illinois in the Final Four and beat Seton Hall 80-79, in overtime, to claim the championship. Glen Rice was named the Final Four’s Most Outstanding Player. Rice’s 184 total points in the NCAA Tournament is a record that still stands.
