Milwaukee, WI –October 18, 2017 –This morning, the National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum unveiled an exclusive, limited edition Thumbs Down Guy Bobblehead featuring Gary Dunaier. The 54 year-oldDunaierbecame an internet sensation after cameras caught him giving a thumbs down sign following Todd Frazier’s three-run homer in the New York Yankees game against the Tampa Bay Rays on September 11th, 2017, which was being played at Citi Field due to Hurricane Irma. The Yankees and their fans quickly adopted the act, flashing thumbs down at each other after a run or a hit. The Yankees won the game and seven of their next eight before rallying from a 0-2 series deficit to beat the Indians in the ALDS and tying the ALCS series against the Houston Astros 2-2.
The bobbleheads, which feature Gary’s Thumbs Down pose on a Thumbs Down shaped base, are available for preorderonline exclusively in the Hall of Fame and Museum Online Store. Each bobblehead will be individually numbered and measure approximately 8” tall. The bobbleheads cost $25 each plus a flat rate shipping charge of $8 per order.
Dunaier, a Queens native and a Mets season ticket holder, scored tickets in the second row behind the Yankees’ dugout for the rare matchup at Citi Field. YES Network cameras caught Dunaier giving the thumbs-down following the home run, and soon the image and video was being shared all over the internet and social media. Two days later, Frazier used the thumbs-down sign to the Yankees dugout after hitting an RBI single. By the end of the week, the entire team was doing it. The signal has continued throughout the postseason and has been adopted by the team and their fans.
“By now, every baseball fan in the world has likely seen the Thumbs Down celebration and most have heard the story about how it got started,” said Phil Sklar, Co-Founder and CEO of the National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum. “It’s been crazy to see how this simple gesture made by a single fan has ignited a team and rallied its fan base, and now the celebration will live on forever with a Gary Dunaier bobblehead!”
Gary continues to be amazed at how big the “Thumbs Down Guy” phenomenon has become, and is taking the whole thing in stride. “I’m amazed and thrilled that the National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum has chosen to honor me and my gesture with a bobblehead,” he said.
The bobbleheads, which are expected to arrive in January, are being produced by the National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum, which has produced nearly a dozen bobbleheads of sports fans. The bobbleheads are not licensed by or affiliated with the New York Yankees, New York Mets or by MLB.
